However, it really ruins the immersion having to watch movies in windowed mode or with the play controls always visible. This forces Steam Link to stream the entire screen, black bands and controls included, and does not stretch the video anymore. This way i experience no framerate drops, but i have new resolution issues! If the movie i watch has black bands on the top and bottom of the video, whenever i enter fullscreen mode in VLC, Steam Link automatically selects the video that is being played, ignores the black bands on top and bottom, and stretches the image vertically on my TV! The only way around it is to play videos windowed or keep the bottom VLC controls always active.

So, as a workaround, i tried adding VLC as a game in steam and playing my videos via steam link like this. If i exit fullscreen mode on VLC or enter and exit big picture again, the problem goes away and i can continue watching, but it happens every 15 minutes and it's very annoying! I tried tweaking all of the settings in the remote play section of Steam but nothing worked! The host computer plays the video well, so it's Steam Link related. Now, after 15 minutes of playing a VLC video in desktop mode i start experiencing framerate drops.

I would minimize steam and use my steam controller to control my desktop and run VLC player and play the videos.Įver since the new Big Picture updated a few months ago, however, this method does not work so well anymore. So, ever since 2018 i've been using the Steam Link Samsung app to stream VLC movies from my desktop to my Samsung TV via a wired ethernet connection.
